Chail Wildlife Sanctuary the least Known Wildlife Sanctuary of Himachal Pradesh

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is the least known wildlife sanctuary in the country, but it is one of the most beautiful parts of Himachal Pradesh, which one should not miss to include in their itinerary.


Chail Wildlife Sanctuary, surrounded by cluster of Oak and Deodar forest ranges is home to rich flora and fauna making it a beautiful place to visit for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The sanctuary was established in the year 1976, Chail provides suitable atmosphere for various species of flora and fauna to thrive. Some of the most commonly found species in this sanctuary are Wild Boar, Himalayan Black Bear, Goral, Porcupine, Indian Muntjac, Rhesus Macaque and leopard. Apart from these, there are many other endangered species of animals and birds found in this sanctuary.

The dense cover of Oak and Deodar makes a beautiful place for birds and pheasants to enjoy their stay in Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. While here one can catch the view of the lovely birds but the most common seen here are Golden Eagle and Grey Headed Fly catcher. Some threatened species of  birds found here are red headed vulture, pallid harrier, grey winged blackbird, Himalayan bulbul, blue capped redstart, green backed tit, parakeet, etc.


Brief History
Chail wildlife sanctuary the most popular attraction of Chail in Himachal Pradesh was once the hunting ground of Maharaja of Patiala Bhupender Singh. He founded the hill station Chail, but elopement with the daughter of Lord Kitchener, Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army, he was banished and was not allowed to enter Chail.

Things to Do: Chail offer excellent opportunity to enjoy trekking in order to explore the wilderness and the beauty of nature by the nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Here tourists can enjoy the lovely view of the animals inside their natural phenomenon. One can also visit to Chir breeding Farm which is another major tourist attraction. The green cover of the sanctuary offer many other exciting things to do and see including photography, which is must for tourist visiting here.

Best time to Visit

Chail being a hill station experience cool weather condition throughout the year and the temperature during the summer season ranges to 15 degree Celsius while during the winter season temperature does not exceeds to 24 degree Celsius. Winter in Chail is extremely cold and the temperature sometime drops down to zero degree Celsius. So the best time to visit here is between March –July and September to November.
