Bhrigu Lake, One of the Religious as Well As Scenic Destination in Kullu District



Bhrigu Lake is a popular tourist destination in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. Placed at a height of about 14,100 ft above sea level, the lake is situated at a distance of about 6 km from Gulaba village, to the eastern

side of Rothang Pass. In order to reach this lake, one has to trek either from Gulaba village or from Vashishth temple, which is also popular known for its hot water springs. 

The Bhrigu Lake is named after a renowned sage Bhrigu, as it is believed that the sage had meditated on the banks of this lake. Maharishi Bhrigu is regarded as one of the top seven renowned sages of the Hindu religion. Due to this legendary belief, this water body holds a significant place in Hindu religion.  Legends has it that at this site, the renowned sage also wrote the Bhrigu Samhita, which is an astrological manuscript involving the predictions of the future and some important records of the past.

After reaching the lake, one can also visit the Nehru Kund, which is a natural spring, fed by the water of the lake. As the place is surrounded by snow capped Himalayas, it adds to the beauty of this holy lake.

The Trip to Bhirgu Lake
1st Day- First you got to drive from the main town of Manali to the Manali-Rothang Highway, close to the Gulaba village. One can get a picturesque view of Kullu Valley from this place. From the Gulaba Village, you got start walking towards east and then climb through the dense deodar forest. Then after crossing a small stream, you will reach the first camping site of the trek, Kothi Theli.
2nd Day- The second day you start trekking towards the Bhrigu Lake from Kothi Theli. The route from here is quite strenuous as it is very steep and the altitude rises as you climb higher across a mountain ridge. After a short trek onwards from the ridge, you will reach the holy lake, where you will have to camp.
3rd Day- After enjoying the mesmerizing views of the lake and the Nehru Kund during the morning time, you got to start preparing for your return. While returning from the lake you got to cross a small stretch of meadows and then hike a mountain, in order to reach Vashisht Theli, where you will have to camp for a night. While coming to this place, you will come across the Pandu Ropa, the rice fields of Pandavas.    
4th Day- On the last day of the trek you will have to descend down a steep slope to the Vashist village. While coming down, one will get the scenic view of the entire Kullu valley. While walking through the forest and apple orchards of the region, you will finally reach the Vashist hot spring. Over here, you can enjoy a dip in the hot spring, to relax your tired body after the trek and then head to Manali

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the lake is from the end of May to October.
