Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary, One of the Unexplored Destinations in Himachal Pradesh



Spreading over an area of about 281.5 km, the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is located amid the lush green forests of Arunachal Pradesh. The place has been named after the Mehao Lake,

which is a fresh water lake found within the premises of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is also referred as a green paradise and is one of the favorite destinations among the bird watchers in India. Various experts have tagged the place as one of the perfect wildlife preserves in India. A special feature about this sanctuary is the untouched beauty of this place. 

Attractions
Flora
The sanctuary includes mountain ranges and the vegetation of this entire area varies as according to their altitudes. The vegetation of this place is a varied one with the inclusion of tropical evergreen forest, shrubs and herbs, bamboos, sub tropical and temperate forests, temperate broad leave forest and temperate conifer forest. All together the area has a diverse variety of floral species like Terminalia Chebula, Abizzia Sherriffi, Messua Ferra, Bombax Ceiba, Phyllostchya Bamusoides, Dendrocalamus Giganteus, Magnolia Species, Rnmex Hastatus, Betula Alnoides, Texas Baccata, Tsuga Abies and lot more.

Fauna
As the area is very much rich in diverse variety of vegetation, similarly the sanctuary is inhabited by diverse species of wild animals. The large diverse vegetation of the place provides food and shelter to various kinds of insects, reptiles, birds and animals. The diverse species of wild animals found in this wildlife sanctuary are tiger, fishing cat, common mongoose, jackal, leopard, Assamese macaque, Indian elephant, guar, sambar, barking deer etc. The wild animals found in the higher ranges of the park are snow leopard, serow, red panda, musk deer and goral.

Avifauna
More than 200 species of birds have also been recorded at this sanctuary, making it a perfect place for bird watching. The diverse variety of bird species found in this area are cotton teal, Himalayan pied kingfisher, three toed kingfisher, monal pheasant, Japanese awfinch, godwall, great pied hornbill, Tibetan greybacked shrike,  black napped oriole, wren, red headed laughing thrust, large racket-tailed drongo and lots more. 

Butterflies
The sanctuary is also home to over 232 species of colourful butterflies. The species of butterflies that are commonly in this area are glassy bluebottle, great zebra, common peacock, Red Helen, Yellow Helen etc. 

Apart from all these diverse species of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes are also found in this wildlife sanctuary.  Some diverse species of fishes are also found in the Mehao Lake of the sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is between the months of October to April.   

Accommodation
There is a Forest Rest House and a Sally Lake Guest House as for the accommodation within the premises of the sanctuary. Apart from these there are several budget and luxury hotels located at a close distance around the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary. 

How to Reach
By Road: The sanctuary is easily accessed from Roing, located at a distance of about 15 km. Regular bus and taxi services are available from Roing to the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Train: The nearest airport to the wildlife sanctuary is in Tinsukia, which is located at a distance of about 113 km from Roing. The station operates regular trains from places like New Delhi, Chennai and Guwahati. From Roing regular bus and taxi services are available to the place.

By Air: The nearest airport to the place is Dibrugarh, located at a distance of about 40 km.  Taxi and bus services are available outside the airport to get to the place.
