Mizoram State Museum, A Place That Reveals the Rich Cultural Heritage of Mizoram



The Mizoram State Museum is a multipurpose museum, located on Macdonald Hill in Aizwal, the capital city of the state. It is considered as one of the top tourist destinations

in the state as the place houses an interesting collection of artifacts that informs the visitors about the cultural heritage of Mizoram.
 
Attractions
The Mizoram State Museum is located close to the Chief Minister’s bungalow in Aizwal and was established in the year 1977. The museum exhibits more than 2,500 items that reveal the rich cultural heritage of the state. Each of the items that have been displayed at this museum has their own story to tell about the cultural and tribal background of the region.

The items that have been displayed at this place are weapons and arms, photographs, tribal textiles, stone sculptures, natural historical specimens, musical instruments and archaeological objects. The chief highlight among the items exhibited at this museum is the various different textiles that are worn by the different Mizo tribes, especially the brightly colored shawls woven with symbolic motifs. There is a separate section that displays the fascinating textiles of the tribes of Mizoram. The Mizoram State Museum is very much popular among the tourists, especially among the ones who are interested in learning about the history of the place. 

Visiting Time: The museum is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays and from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays. Alike other museums in India, this museum also remains closed on Sundays and public holidays. 

Entry Fee: The entry fee to the museum is Rs 5 per head.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the museum is from the months of November to February.

How to Reach
By Road: The place can be easily reached by road through various means of transport from different parts of Aizwal, as it is located at the center of the city. Aizwal has a very good network of roads that connects the place with places like Imphal (374 km), Guwahati (506 km), Agartala (443 km), Kohima (497km) and Shillong (430 km). Regular government and private buses ply to Aizwal from these places.
By Air: Aizwal has its own airport that is well connected with places like Kolkata, Guwahati and Silchar. Local and hired taxis are available from the airport to the museum. 

By Train: The nearest railway station to the place is Silchar in Assam, located at a distance of about 180 km. However the more convenient railway station to get to this place is Guwahati, located at a distance of about 506 km. Guwahati railway station is well linked with almost all the major cities in India. Regular buses and hired taxis are available from these stations to Aizwal.
